Alan Cumming will make history playing the first openly gay lead character in a network drama on the upcoming CBS series “Instinct.”

Cumming plays Dylan, a former CIA operative who changes his life path to become a professor and author. He gets pulled back into his old life when the NYPD request his help to catch a serial killer.

Dylan is also married to a man in the series.

During the TCA winter press panel, Cumming praised CBS for including a lead gay character on one of their shows.

“I applaud everyone at CBS for having the courage to put that on, in the climate that might not be the best time to do it…the President is actively condoning, by his silence, violence and persecution against the LGBT community….I think it’s the perfect time and needs to be done…[It’s] all that more important we should have a character with a healthy same-sex marriage,” Cumming says.

“Instinct” is based on the novel “Murder Games” by James Patterson. Whoopi Goldberg and Bojana Novakovic also star.

The series premiere airs on March 11.
