Venice Pride raises largest rainbow flag as part of its weekend festivities

Venice Pride kicks off its weekend-long celebration with the raising of the world’s largest rainbow flag at Windward Plaza (1 Windward Ave. Los Angeles) on Friday, June 1 from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

United We Pride commissioned the world’s largest free-flying rainbow flag to celebrate Pride events all over the world. According to the event’s website, the flag is “larger than the 1,033 square foot flag that took flight in Port Elizabeth, South Africa as part of Nelson Mandela Bay Pride in late 2014.” Exact dimensions of the flag will be released later.

After the flag raising, which is also hosted by the TransChorus of Los Angeles, the flag will tour the globe to San Francisco, Paris, London, Berlin, Vancouver, Sydney, Miami, Tokyo and New York City.

Venice Pride continues on Saturday, June 2 with the Beach, Please! Big Beach Clean Up from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The group will meet at the Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower (900 Ocean Front Walk, Los Angeles). Participants are asked to register and sign a mandatory waiver.

The Queens of the Caribbean Pride Party Brunch follows on Saturday, June 2 from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Anchor (235 Main St. Los Angeles). Venice Pride specials include $12 bottomless mimosas and $1 oysters. RSVP to be entered to win a dinner for two.

Venice Pride Sign Lightening & Block Party is on Saturday, June 2 from 4-10 p.m. at the Venice Sign (99 Windward Ave., Venice). There will be a DJ spinning tracks, exhibitors and a Food Truck Ally. The sign lighting ceremony starts at 8:30 p.m. accompanied by a performance from a surprise Grammy-winning singer. Attendees can also adopt one of the 87 bulbs on the Venice Pride Sign. The bulbs will shine from June 2-30 and then will be shipped along with a certificate of authenticity.

Gaywatch, Venice Pride’s official Pride after party, is on Saturday, June 2 from 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m. at the Birdcage (2640 Main St., Santa Monica). Tickets are $10. Proceeds support Venice Pride.

Queer as Funk, another after party, is at the Del Monte Speakeasy (52 Windward Ave., Venice) on Saturday, June 2 from 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m. There will be a performance from LA-based power funk/soul band The Puscie Jones Revue. Tickets are $10 and include priority front of line access to the Townhouse starting at 5 p.m., a souvenir Venice Pride wristband, drink specials and entry to the party. Ticket proceeds benefit Venice Pride.

Dogtown Down & Dirty, a Venice Pride after party, is at Canal Club (2025 Pacific Ave., Venice) on Saturday, June 2 from 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m. DJ LiquorBox will play music starting at 10 p.m. Space is limited. Tickets are $10.

Venice Pride closes out with Lady Gays at the Venice Whaler (10 Washington Blvd., Venice) on Sunday, June 3 from noon-8 p.m. DJ John Renaud will spin tracks from noon-2 p.m., DJ Young Wags goes on from 2-3 p.m., followed by DJ Ry Toast from 3-4:30 p.m. and closing out with DJ Whitney Day from 4:30-7 p.m. There will be food and drinks. No cover.
