In the story arc, it’s revealed that Rose Quartz didn’t shatter Pink Diamond, who has been plotting to invade earth, but she is Pink Diamond. Ruby and Sapphire fuse together to form the warrior gem Garnet but they end up splitting. Ruby leaves to live a solitary life in the West but finds herself missing Sapphire. She decides to find Sapphire and propose.
“This way we can be together even when we’re apart,” Ruby tells Sapphire.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Sugar explained the importance of the Ruby and Sapphire romance.
“We absolutely must tell LGBTQ+ children that they belong in this world and they deserve to be loved,” Sugar told EW.“We cannot wait until a child grows up to tell them they deserve to exist and that their story matters. I am overwhelmed with emotion thinking of the years of tireless work from all of us on the crew leading up to this moment.”
