A Golden Globe brunch date with a cast of Rainbows

The 6th annual “Gold Meets Golden” brunch brought together incredible Olympic athletes and Hollywood elite to celebrate Golden Globes weekend. The concept for the soirée began when athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games were surprised by “shout-outs” from their favorite Hollywood celebrities.

“Co-organizer Scott Orlin and I were doing media relations at the London 2012 Games and showed athlete Gabby Douglas a surprise good luck shout-out from her favorite star, Ian Somerhalder of ‘Vampire Diaries,’ explained CW3PR’s gay Founder/CEO, Charley Cullen Walters.

“To this day, Gabby claims she did better on her gold-winning beam routine because she was thinking about him the whole time!” he quipped.

“We learned to never underestimate the power of a young girl’s crush… and realized how amazing It would be to bring some of the athletes out for awards season.”

Over the years, the event has been held during either Globes or Oscars weekend. “To date, we have surprised over 50 athletes and Olympians with their favorite film TV and music stars,” said Walters.

“Celebrities end up being the most star-struck – they are in complete awe of what these athletes have accomplished.”

The stories celebrities and athletes have shared with each other have been so fun to hear, noted Walters. “My favorite to date was seeing Salma Hayek break down in tears when she met gymnastic legend, Nadia Comaneci. She always dreamed of being a gymnast like Nadia, but just wasn’t cut out for it, going into acting instead. Nevertheless, Nadia was her role model growing up, for what a young woman could achieve.”

This year, the organization partnered with Angel City Sports, a leading Paralympic charity in California, with a panel of current, past and future adaptive athletes. A $50,000 donation was also presented by The Points Guy, Brian Kelly, on behalf of the sponsors including Coke and United Airlines.

“With the Olympics making a triumphant return to Los Angeles in 2028, Angel City is helping to foster and train young incredible children to become potential future Paralympians for their own city’s Games,” said Walters.

“That is an amazing ‘full circle’ feeling, and when ‘the Points Guy’ founder, Brian Kelly, doubled our donation to $50,000, the room went wild.”

One of the biggest highlights of the event was the appearance of several cast members from FX’s “POSE,” along with creator, Ryan Murphy. Billy Porter, one of the stars of the popular series, sang a rendition of the Golden Globes winning song Lady Gaga wrote and performed in “A Star is Born.”

“Billy Porter’s rendition of ‘Shallow’ on our signature gold-plated piano was so well received, as was the intro from Lady Gaga co-writer, Mark Ronson,” enthused Walters.

“This song is all about making It from the deep end to the shallow, something both these sporting and Hollywood industries, and our Angel City charity kids, can relate to.”

There were many lgbtq athletes in attendance.

““Scott and I are proud to have hosted many LGBT athletes and guests at the event over the years. Matt Bomer is one of our long time hosts and a fellow Olympic-lover. While growing up, we were both obsessed with the documentary, “Perfect 10” about Nadia and always bow in her presence!”

Legendary diver Greg Louganis and his husband Johnny have attended the event numerous times, as have Jason Collins, Ricky Martin, Nate Berkus, Caitlyn Jenner and Billie Jean King.

Also in attendance; out-NFL player Jeff Rohrer and his new husband, Josh Ross. “I was honored to attend their landmark wedding last month, and also loved seeing Matt Bomer chatting with Adam Rippon about how far LGBT Equality has come these past few years. We still have a long ways to go!”

“After resting a LITTLE from this event, CW3PR will be hopping onto another project, the Super Bowl Equality Party, hosted by out NFL player Esera Tuaolo.

“The event began last year in my home town of Minneapolis and will now move to Atlanta. It is the first NFL-recognized LGBT event in history, and is going to be huge this year.”

With so much A list talent, you need an A list publicist to that huge red carpet and Rembrandt Flores and his team at EFG fit that bill.

“We handled the red carpet and media relations while Charley and his team spend a year in advance putting this amazing event together,” said Flores. “There is a reason why all these A listers from The Olympics and Hollywood want to be at Gold meets Golden—it’s the only event each year that biggest names from both worlds collide for a couple hours on a beautiful day in LA!
