Last week, when the National Endowment of the Arts announced the recipients of their latest round of grant awards, Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles was among them. The 40 year old chorus was awarded $10,000 for its Community Outreach programs.
“This distinguished honor is something we at GMCLA are extremely proud of and is solid recognition of the great work GMCLA is doing in our communities,” Jason Frazier told the Los Angeles Blade.
But, Donald Trump’s favorite news source, Fox News felt otherwise.
On Friday, March 16, Fox News contributor Adam Shaw, formerly of Breitbart, denounced grants to LGBT organizations and programs as funding of “left-wing art projects.”
“The Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles picked up a $10,000 grant of a national tour of a new work “to deliver a message of acceptance for young people,” Shaw wrote.
A number of other LGBT, women’s and gender identity projects were also awarded funds, leading another right wing critic to call the NEA grant awardees “PC claptrap.”
“NEA grants are a form of welfare for cultural elites, as a Heritage Foundation report famously put it two decades ago,” wrote Sohrab Ahmari in Commentary magazine. “Judging by the latest welfare beneficiaries, those elites’ tastes remain as degraded as ever, eschewing the good, the beautiful and the true–and anything timeless and transcendent–in favor of soul-killing PC claptrap.”
“We were stunned to find ourselves mentioned in an article that was so clearly written as hate clickbait,” said GMCLA Executive Director Jonathan Weedman.
Frazier says “GMCLA has always stood for acceptance, tolerance, love, and understanding – and vicious stories of this kind only reaffirm that our message we bring to people is as important right now as it has ever been.”
The entire chorus has now chimed in.
Even FOX News contributors have had enough of the network’s jilted right wing hatefulness.
Retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, a Fox News contributor, today quit the network, blasting the channel as a “propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration” in an email announcing his departure.
“Four decades ago, I took an oath as a newly commissioned officer. I swore to ‘support and defend the Constitution,’ and that oath did not expire when I took off my uniform. Today, I feel that Fox News is assaulting our constitutional order and the rule of law, while fostering corrosive and unjustified paranoia among viewers,” he said.
On Saturday, March 24th and 25th at the Alex Theater in Glendale, the chorus presents “Come As You Are – Music of the 90’s.” There are three shows to choose from – Saturday, March 24 @ 2pm or 8pm & Sunday, March 25 @ 2pm.
Come as you are and support them!
