A restaurant received a one-star review on Yelp for hanging a Pride flag in its front window.
Zia Gianna Bakery and Caffe, located in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was called “absolutely disgusting” in the review for showing LGBT support.
“After seeing the rainbow flag in the window, I’ve had it with this place and have thrown in the towel… In case you are wondering, only the owner himself happens to be Sicilian or Italian and none of his staff is even Italian or Sicilian… Nor are the customers, and one would wonder why… Well, that flag says all and when you delve deeper to see the real customer base here, it’s clearly geared and catered ONLY to those who rally behind the rainbow flag,” the review reads.
The review does note that the food is “decent” but seemed to take the most issue with the Pride flag.
Owner Nino Barbalace told FOX25 that criticism on the restaurant’s food or service is different than bringing in political opinions.
“If you go to a place and … you’re not happy with the service, you’re not happy with the food, I mean I understand that if I made a mistake because we make mistakes, too. This is a restaurant, this is not politics,” Barbalace says.
Customer Tiffany Andrade, who came to the restaurant to show her support, told Fox25 that their community should be more accepting.
“We thought we were beyond that at this point,” Andrade says. “Luckily we live in the land of the free and people are entitled to their own opinion. But I do think it’s something to understand that we are an open community and there are people who come from all different countries and all different backgrounds and we should be welcoming of everyone.”
