Janelle Monáe has hinted about her sexuality in her music, such as her songs “Mushrooms & Roses” and “Q.U.E.E.N” and the music video “Make Me Feel,” but now the singer has officially come out as pansexual in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“Being a queer black woman in America—someone who has been in relationships with both men and women—I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker,” she says.

Monáe, 32, says she considered herself bisexual at first but “read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

She says her new album “Dirty Computer,” which comes out April 27, will further explore sexuality and feeling different.

“I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you,” she says. “This album is for you. Be proud.”

Monáe didn’t address her dating life but fans have speculated she could be dating actress Tessa Thompson who appeared as one of her love interests in the music video for “Make Me Feel.” Thompson also appeared as Monáe’s clitoris in the music videoPynk.”
